This Maynard breech loading saddle ring carbine is chambered in .50 caliber black powder and features a 20-inch barrel with a 14.5-inch length of pull. The carbine retains its saddle ring and is in functional mechanical condition. The firearm shows minor signs of use and wear consistent with normal handling and age. The bore shows rifling, however it is heavily worn and is approaching a smoothbore condition due to wear.

This Maynard carbine represents one of the innovative American breech-loading designs of the 19th century, developed by Edward Maynard. Maynard systems were used both commercially and in military trials during the mid-to-late 1800s, including limited service during the American Civil War. Known for its unique tape primer system and efficient breech loading mechanism, the Maynard carbine remains a significant example of early American metallic cartridge and percussion transition firearms.
