American, 19th century, silk on linen. Includes Rebecca Botterby's 1842 sampler with house, landscape, sheep, flower baskets, and a floral border, 19.5" high, 16.25" (framed); together with Susannah Wilke's sampler with birds, fruit baskets, trees, and a small house, 16.75" high, 12.75" wide (framed). Susannah Wikle was born in February of 1807 in Salt Sulphur Springs in what is now Monroe County, West Virginia, and while she was still a child, her parents moved the family to Greene County, Ohio. She married Evan Ogan in Clinton County, Ohio, in 1824, and they had eighteen children in twenty-five years, all of whom lived well into adulthood. The Ogans moved to Illinois around 1850, where Susannah died and is buried in Bureau County. Provenance: Collection of Bob and Maxine Edwards, New Philadelphia, Ohio.
