Steven Scholes Signed Original Oil Painting – Liverpool Strand Street Dock Road 1911 Edwardian Cityscape
Subject & Medium
Stunning original fine art oil painting on canvas by listed British artist Steven Scholes (b.1952). This work captures an atmospheric Edwardian street scene in Liverpool, “Strand Street (Dock Road) 1911”, showing the city’s famous waterfront at the height of its commercial power.
Painted in oil on canvas and presented in its original traditional frame, this is a genuine one-off artwork, not a print or reproduction.
️ Composition & Technique
The scene is set on a wet evening along Strand Street and Dock Road. Your eye is first drawn to the distant outline of the Liver Building, complete with its Liver Bird, looming through the soft mist of the docks. A long row of elegant street lamps leads the viewer down the cobbled road, their reflections glistening on the rain-soaked surface.
Scholes populates the street with horse-drawn carriages, early motor vehicles and well-dressed ladies and gentlemen in Edwardian coats and hats. Warmly lit shop fronts – including the name “M. Jones” – and handsome brick and stone warehouses line the right-hand side, giving real depth and architectural interest.
His trademark technique is evident: rich browns and umbers for the wet cobbles, soft golden and white highlights for the gas lamps and windows, and a beautifully modulated sky that moves from smoky greys to gentle ochres. The careful handling of light and reflection creates a convincing sense of movement and atmosphere – you can almost hear the clip-clop of hooves on the stones.
About the Artist
Steven Scholes is a professional Lancashire artist, born in 1952, who has painted from an early age. His talent was recognised in 1974 when he won the prestigious Manchester Evening News Art Competition, a contest open to both professional and amateur artists. This success led to strong demand for his work, and by 1978 he was able to become a full-time professional painter.
As a child he often explored Manchester with his grandfather, developing a deep love for Victorian and Edwardian architecture and old street scenes. These experiences shaped his mature style: vivid historical cityscapes full of movement, figures and transport, with spectacular light effects and wet pavements that glimmer under street lamps.
Scholes has enjoyed numerous sell-out exhibitions and is now highly sought after by galleries and private collectors in Britain and abroad. His work appears regularly at auction, where prices have ranged from modest sums into the low four figures; since 2012 his auction record stands at around $1,660 USD for the painting “City Lights, London 1958”.

The canvas surface is overall very good with stable paint and attractive original finish. Under close inspection there are tiny specks of foxing/staining and some light craquelure consistent with age and medium, but nothing that distracts from the image when on display.
The original frame has general wear: light scuffs, small chips and minor losses to the moulding in places, again entirely commensurate with age and adding to its period character.
Hanging thread is already attached to the back, so it is ready for immediate wall display.
