Description
“Thirlmere and Helvellyn Lake District” Painting by Edward Horace Thompson, c. 1925
Subject & Medium
This exquisite artwork captures a Lake District landscape view in Cumbria, showcasing the tranquil Thirlmere reservoir and the iconic Helvellyn mountain. Executed in watercolour on paper, the painting is protected by a front glass cover, preserving its delicate tones and fine brushwork & dated 1925.
Composition & Technique
Edward Horace Thompson’s exceptional perspective draws the viewer into the heart of the scene. The painting masterfully balances light and dark (chiaroscuro), with shimmering white reflections on the lake’s surface set against darker water passages. In the foreground, vibrant green grasses, blooming purple heather, and a tall lone tree on a slope set the stage, while sloping hills and mist-veiled mountains fill the background. The left flank of the mountains glows under golden light, and the dramatic sky above offers a mix of overcast clouds with patches of blue peeking through. The artist’s careful use of green, brown, purple, white, grey, and blue hues creates a striking, lively composition.

About the Artist
Edward Horace Thompson (1879–1949) was one of Cumbria’s finest landscape painters. Born in Seaton, he worked in a local factory office but devoted his true passion to capturing the landscapes of his birthplace. Eventually, he established a studio in Cockermouth, creating watercolours now held in private collections worldwide. His works have been exhibited at Gladstone & Patterson and auctioned at reputable houses, with sale prices reaching up to $4,605 USD — a testament to his lasting significance.
About Thirlmere & Helvellyn
To deepen your appreciation of this work, it’s worth noting the importance of Thirlmere and Helvellyn (see this reference link):
Helvellyn is the third-highest peak in both England and the Lake District, famous for its dramatic ridges like Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, and beloved by poets like Wordsworth and Coleridge.
Thirlmere was once a narrow natural lake, later transformed in the 19th century into a reservoir supplying Manchester. Its surrounding fells — such as Armboth Fell and Raven Crag — provide magnificent views of both the lake and Helvellyn beyond.
This scenery has been cherished for centuries, attracting walkers, explorers, and artists alike — making Thompson’s painting part of a long tradition of celebrating these landscapes.
