Composition & Technique
The composition is a masterclass in atmospheric Victorian night painting, bathed in soft, silver moonlight that stretches across the cobbled street and highlights the façade of Trinity Church in the background. The vertical shaft of light that cuts through the center of the scene draws the eye toward the church, creating a spiritual, almost reverent tone.

Flanking the street are tall Georgian buildings, their façades cast in shadow, lending depth and a haunting stillness. This deliberate contrast between light and dark evokes a classic chiaroscuro effect, heightening the scene's dramatic mood. In the distance, subtle streetlamp glow gently warms the far end of the road.

Small figures wander quietly along the street, adding a sense of human presence and narrative — a peaceful nighttime stroll beneath the moonlight. Their elongated shadows anchor them in the ethereal atmosphere.

About the Artist
Walter Linsley Meegan (1859–1944) was a Victorian artist from Leeds, Yorkshire, trained at the Leeds School of Art. A protégé of John Atkinson Grimshaw, Meegan specialized in moody nocturnes of British and American port cities.
He earned acclaim in New York, securing commissions from elite collectors, and later returned to England, settling in Scarborough.
His work remains highly collectible, with auction records including $20,400 USD at Christie’s for Brooklyn Bridge by Moonlight.
