Description
British Impressionist Oil Painting — “Banks of the Wye, Coppet Hill Herefordshire” by Charles Neal
Subject & Medium
A gorgeous original oil painting on canvas by renowned British impressionist Charles Neal, titled “Banks of the Wye, Coppet Hill Herefordshire”. Circa 1989.
This piece centers on Coppet Hill, one of the most striking landmarks in the Lower Wye Valley, south of Goodrich. Known for its breathtaking views, limestone slopes, woodlands, and seasonal beauty, Coppet Hill has long been a magnet for nature lovers and artists alike. Neal’s painting celebrates the charm and tranquility of this iconic Herefordshire scene.
Composition & Technique
Painted in a classic British impressionist style, this work comes alive with atmospheric light, vivid colours, and expressive brushwork.
In the foreground, textured, layered strokes capture tall summer grasses in soft greens and gold, dotted with bluebells.
To the left, mature trees rise in deep greens, browns, and soft greys, painted with confident dabs and sweeps.
The middle distance carries the viewer’s gaze across hedgerows and patchwork fields, with three small farm workers (in crisp white shirts and hats) walking by the shimmering River Wye.
Above it all, a wide pale blue sky opens up, scattered with light, feathery clouds applied in broad, expressive strokes.
Neal’s technique focuses on mood and atmosphere rather than exacting detail, using luminous colour blends and visible brush marks to evoke the feeling of the landscape.
