Mary Garret(t) going by the alias of Jones, was a 32-year-old cook who was sentenced to 7 years for the theft of a watch, and was transported to Van Diemen's Land arriving on the 'Gilbert Henderson' 24th April 1840. She already had two prior criminal convictions in England which probably precipitated her exile to Australia, and her ongoing gaol record in Van Diemen's Land reports numerous further infringements, such one in 1843, which is captured on this token. It is difficult to decipher the official written records concerning this incident, so we need to rely on the obtuse ramblings captured on the token, which seems to indicate she received an additional 2-month sentence for patter (likely sarcastic backchat).
