Description
Fine FDC honoring the Military Academy, postmarked West Point, May 26, 1937, and signed by two American aces, JOHN C. ‘PAPPY’ HERBST and ROBIN OLDS, who both became members of 1946 Lockheed Common Multi-Mission Truck (CMMT, ‘comet’) flying team, and led the showcase to popularize the jet age and boost post-war military. JOHN HERBST (1909-1946) was the second highest scoring ace during World War II in the China Burma India Theater with 18 confirmed victories, while ROBIN OLDS (1922-2007) was a triple ace with a combined 16 victories during World War II and the Vietnam War. After the war in April 1946, aces Herbst and Olds were part of the jet acrobatics team flying the new Lockhead P-80A Shooting Star jets. The 412th Fighter Group began a nine-city transcontinental tour called 'Project Comet' to demonstrate the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star, the U.S. Army Air Force's first operational jet fighter. On July 4th, John Herbst was fatally injured when his aircraft stalled and crashed near the Del-Mar racetrack in California. Fine.
