Two items signed by prominent players in during the Napoleonic Wars, includes: JACQUES-ETIENNE MACDONALD, DUC DE TARENT (1765 - 1840) French marshal, defeated by Russian forces under Aleksandr Suvorov at the battle of Trebbia, played an important part in the battle of Wagram (1809), the Peninsular War, and the Russian campaign. Partly-printed D.S. ‘Macdonald’, 1p. 4to., Paris, April 17, 1802, a promotion of an unidentified gentleman to the position of Chevalier in the Order of Charles III of Spain. Very boldly signed, tipped to a larger sheet and bearing an area excised at bottom left which has been carefully restored. WITH: EDOUARD CASIMIR MORTIER, DUC DE TREVISO (1768-1835) French general and Marshal of France who served in the Netherlands, Meuse and on the Rhone. Killed by the ‘internal machine’, an apparatus of 25 musket barrels firing at once and intended for King Louis-Philippe. A.L.S. ‘Ed. Mortier’, 1p. large 4to., Paris, Feb. 14, 1817, to an unidentified gentleman requesting his brevet and a certificate about his service as Knight of the Royal Order of the Legion of Honor. Tipped at left edge to another sheet, very good. Two pieces.
