Description
(1775 - 1828) American army officer in the War of 1812, defeated the British at the Battle of Sackett's Harbor, captured Fort Erie, and defeated a British army at the Battle of Chippawa. In 1821, he was appointed Commanding General of the Army and held that post until his death. Good association A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Boston, Aug. 28, 1818, to U.S. Army Quartermaster General THOMAS JESUP (1788-1860). Brown transmits his desire to meet with Jesup in New York during an upcoming visit, and signs boldly ‘Jac. Brown’ in black ink at the conclusion. He also executes his free-franking signature ‘ Maj. Genl. Brown’ on the integral cover, this signature affected by a tear where the letter has been roughly opened. Evenly toned, shows ink burn overall, with original mailing folds showing a few internal splits, else very good. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Brown with his facsimile signature below the image, as well as a modern pamphlet describing Brown’s exploits, ‘Across the Niagara 1814: The Battles of Fort Erie, Chippewa and Lundy’s Lane’, by Thomas M. Borsick [Lexington, VA; T.M.B. Enterprises], 1994.
