Description
(1807 - 1870) Confederate General and commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, arguably the most brilliant commander of field armies in American history. A very desirable S.P., 2.5 x 4 in. sepia, a carte de visite featuring a chest-up view of the Confederate general in uniform within an oval frame, signed ‘R E Lee’ in black ink at the bottom right of the print. The verso features the backstamp of the Lee Photographic Gallery of Richmond, Virginia, operated by John W. Davies, who produced this image of Lee in 1864. Shows a spot of soiling to the right-hand side, with the top corners clipped, otherwise in very good condition overall.
