Description
(1824-1864) Popular and well-liked colonel of the 1st Georgia Battalion, temporarily arrested under orders of Gen. Clement Stevens for arranging a front-line truce following the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain so that both sides could tend to their dead and wounded. Had his horse shot from under him and was severely wounded at Atlanta, but nevertheless led his men at Franklin, where he was killed. Very rare signature ‘Geo A. Smith’ in black ink on a 3.25 x 1 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter, adding the sentiment ‘Your father’. Mounted to a card, somewhat soiled, else very good.
