(1839-1922) Union colonel and editor, the son of ‘Parson’ Brownlow, remembered for his participation in the raid that killed John Hunt Morgan at Greeneville. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Washington, Apr. 25, 1892, to Gen. Henry M. Cist in reference to Cist’s research for his monumental work, ‘The Army of the Cumberland’. In part: ‘…Hon. Joseph S. Fowler, Ex-Senator from Tennessee, was on intimate terms with Gen. [George S.] Thomas and much in his society, after the war, while the General was at Nashville. Gen. Thomas told Mr. F. in detail, the cause of Grant’s prejudice against him. I told Mr. Fowler that as you were writing Gen. Thomas’ life I would be glad it he would write you what Gen. T. had said…’. Brownlow adds Fowler’s address and, in a postscript remarks: ‘…The St. Louis Globe-Democrat of yesterday…has a fine article of several columns on Thomas by A.K. McClure…’. Folds, very good.
