Description
(1832 - 1863) Union major general, commanded an expedition against Biloxi, Mississippi, in April 1862, and another sent against Ponchatoula. At the Battle of Fort Wagner, Strong was in command of the brigade which included Col. Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts. Wounded in the engagement, he would die of disease twelve days after the battle. Very rare and important war-date manuscript D.S., 1p. 4to., Saint Helena Island, SC, June 16, 1863, his ‘General Orders No. 13’ announcing his assumption of the command he would hold upon his death, in part: ‘...Pursuant to Spacial Orders No 341 current… Head Quarters Department of the South, the undersigned assumes command of the troops on this island and announces his Staff as follows…’, proceeding to list four officers and their positions. He signs ‘Geo. C. Strong’ at the conclusion in black ink, with his rank executed in another hand. Shows horizontal folds, trimmed at the bottom edge and with damp stains and apparent rodent damage to the top edge, still in very good condition overall.
