(1827 - 1905) Union major general who saw action at Forts Henry and Donelson and was later criticized by Grant for his costly hesitancy at Shiloh. Later serving as governor of the New Mexico Territory, Wallace is best remembered as the author of ‘Ben-Hur’. A good pair of signed items, includes: a war-date A.N.S. in pencil on a 3.75 x 2.5 in. card. [n.p.], Dec. 2, 1864, in full: ‘Guards at Hd Qrs- will admit the bearer, Mr. Lossing, to my room, to secure certain books on one of his [uncl.]’ He signs ‘Lew Wallace’ at the conclusion, adding the date and his rank ‘Maj. Gen. Com’. Faintly toned, with scattered and faint foxing to the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition. WITH: Signature ‘Lew. Wallace’ in blue ink on a 3.5 x 2.75 in. card. Shows a 1 in. tear to the top left corner, with mounting remnants to the verso, in very good condition overall. Two pieces. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Wallace, with his facsimile signature beneath the portrait.
