Description
(1754-1833) British cavalry colonel during the Revolutionary War, notorious for the massacre of Continental soldiers during the Battle of Waxhaws. Later a Liverpool MP and strong supporter of slavery. Scarce A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., [London], Dec. 19, 1820, to booksellers Cadell & Davies. Tarleton somewhat peevishly asks for an explanation of his accounts, in part: ‘...I am desirous of some explanation, relative to the Campaigns, published at your House many years ago. Repeatedly have I written for a copy with a preface; but a silence on your part as unexpected as unsatisfactory has prevailed. A good many copies of with the preface were printed, and very few have met my eye. I should therefore be glad of a general amount from the beginning of our dealings accompanied with some explanations of the late proceedings…’ He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘General & G. C. B.’ Shows original mailing folds, with ink show-through to both pages, a pencil identifying inscription at the top of the first page, and a triangular loss to the edge of the integral cover, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall.
