Description
(1881 - 1959) American film director and producer of the classics 'The Ten Commandments' and 'King of Kings'. Good content and association T.L.S. on Cecil B. DeMille Productions letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Hollywood, Nov. 8, 1948, to Stanton Griffis, formerly the head of Paramount Pictures but at the time serving as U.S. Ambassador to Egypt. DeMille opens by reflecting on a recent visit to Griffis in Egypt, and continues, in part: ‘...The report you enclosed from Hanna Rizk was most gratifying and inspiring and I know that Mr. [Jeremiah] Milbank must feel as grateful as I do for having had the opportunity to produce THE KING OF KINGS; it has meant so much to so many who, without that picture, would perhaps never have known the message of the Gospels… I started shooting SAMSON AND DELILAH on October fourth, hitting about an eighteen-hour a day schedule. Hedy Lemarr and Victor Mature are in the title roles and it is in Technicolor, of course. I think you are in for quite a thrill when you see the picture. Anyway, all the ‘brass hats’ have been out here taking a look and they seem equally enthusiastic – let’s hope that I’m still the fair-haired boy after its release. If not, perhaps you’ll need a third assistant ambassador, a post I’ll consider, providing a Dahabia on the Nile is part of the deal…” He signs ‘C. B. deMille’ at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows original mailing folds, an additional fold at the top right corner, and staples holes at top left, else very good to fine.
