Donald K. “Deke” Slayton (1924–1993) was one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts and a central figure in the development of the American space program. Although grounded for many years due to a heart condition, he served as NASA’s Director of Flight Crew Operations, selecting and assigning astronauts for the Gemini and Apollo programs. After being medically cleared for flight, Slayton finally reached space as the American Docking Module Pilot on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975, the first joint space mission between the United States and the Soviet Union, marking a significant milestone in international space cooperation.
