Donald K. “Deke” Slayton (1924-1993) was one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts and a pioneering figure in the American space program. Grounded from flight status for many years due to a heart condition, he nevertheless served as NASA’s Director of Flight Crew Operations, selecting and assigning astronauts for the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. After being medically cleared, Slayton finally flew in space as the American docking module pilot on the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975, the first joint mission between the United States and the Soviet Union, symbolizing a new era of international cooperation in space exploration.
