The cover commemorates the conclusion of the first crewed mission to America’s Skylab space station. Launched on May 25, 1973, Skylab 1 carried Commander Charles Conrad Jr., Science Pilot Joseph P. Kerwin, and Pilot Paul J. Weitz into orbit to rescue and activate the damaged Skylab station after its troubled launch. During their 28-day mission, the crew conducted extensive scientific experiments, repaired critical systems, and demonstrated that long-duration human habitation in space was feasible.

Paul J. Weitz (1932-2017) was a NASA astronaut who flew aboard Skylab 1 and later commanded Space Shuttle mission STS-6. During the Skylab mission he played a key role in the repair and operation of the station, helping establish the foundation for future long-duration spaceflight programs.
