The cachet depicts the NASA M2-F3 lifting body research aircraft and identifies Dana as pilot for Flight No. M34-49. Dana has boldly signed the cover in black ink.

William H. “Bill” Dana (1930-2014) was a NASA research pilot, engineer, and astronaut whose career spanned many of America’s most important experimental flight programs. He flew the X-15 rocket plane to the edge of space, earning astronaut wings, and later became one of the principal pilots of NASA’s lifting body program, including the M2-F3. The knowledge gained from these revolutionary aircraft directly influenced the aerodynamic design and landing characteristics of the Space Shuttle, helping bridge the gap between experimental aviation and reusable spacecraft.
