Walter Cunningham (1932–2023) was a Marine Corps fighter pilot, physicist, and NASA astronaut who served as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 7, the first crewed Apollo mission, launched in October 1968. The successful 11-day Earth-orbital flight thoroughly tested the Apollo Command and Service Module, restoring confidence in the program following the Apollo 1 tragedy and paving the way for the lunar missions that followed. After leaving NASA, Cunningham remained active as a businessman, author, and commentator on space exploration.
