The cover is completed in manuscript with the flight details, including departure from NAS Patuxent River, February 23, 1978, aircraft F-14A, aircraft no. 158616, altitude of 2,500 feet, Mach 0.4, the mission purpose noted as “Automatic Carrier,” and remarks reading “Landing Sys.” Creighton has signed in blue ink.

John Oliver Creighton (born 1943) is a retired U.S. Navy captain and NASA astronaut who flew on three Space Shuttle missions: STS-51-G in 1985 as pilot, STS-36 in 1990 as commander, and STS-48 in 1991 as commander. Before joining NASA, he served as a naval aviator and test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, where he evaluated advanced naval aircraft and flight systems. Over the course of his astronaut career, Creighton logged more than 16 days in space.
