Gordon Cooper autographed first day cover commemorating the issuance of the Project Mercury postage stamp honoring John H. Glenn Jr.’s first successful orbital flight by an American. Postmarked at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 20, 1962, the official first day of issue, the cover features the “Commemorating First Successful Orbital Flight by an American” cachet and has been signed by Cooper in black ink across the center.

L. Gordon Cooper Jr. (1927-2004) was one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts. In May 1963, he piloted the Faith 7 spacecraft on the Mercury-Atlas 9 mission, completing 22 orbits of Earth during the final and longest flight of the Mercury program. Cooper later commanded the Gemini 5 mission with Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr., establishing a then-record eight-day spaceflight that demonstrated the feasibility of extended human missions in space. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a colonel and from NASA in 1970.
