Gordon Cooper autographed commemorative postal cover honoring Space Shuttle mission STS-29, postmarked at the Smithsonian Station in Washington, D.C., on March 13, 1989. The cover features cachets commemorating the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery (OV-103) and lists the five-member crew, including Commander Michael Coats, Pilot John E. Blaha, and Mission Specialists Robert C. Springer, James Buchli, and James Bagian. Cooper has signed the cover in blue ink.

Gordon Cooper (1927-2004) was one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts and the pilot of the Mercury-Atlas 9 mission, the final flight of the Mercury program. He later commanded the Gemini 5 mission alongside Charles “Pete” Conrad, setting a then-record for the longest crewed spaceflight. Cooper’s accomplishments helped pave the way for the Apollo program and established him as one of the pioneering figures of American human spaceflight.
