Details:
Charles Conrad Jr. autographed “Astro-Letter” commemorative cover associated with the Apollo 16 Moon Flight, postmarked Houston, Texas, April 15, 1972. The cover bears a bold blue-ink signature of astronaut Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr. and features printed text noting that the enclosed message form was “flown by RR1 rocket during the NASA Apollo 16 Moon Flight.”
The cover was produced as part of a special Rocket Research Institute philatelic program celebrating Apollo-era space exploration. It originates from the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club in Houston and was issued in conjunction with the launch phase of Apollo 16, the fifth crewed lunar landing mission. The distinctive “Astro-Letter” format reflects the widespread public enthusiasm surrounding the Apollo program and the many commemorative items produced to mark America’s lunar achievements.
Conrad’s signature adds particular significance to the piece. Although not a member of the Apollo 16 crew, Conrad was one of NASA’s most accomplished astronauts and had already secured his place in history as commander of Apollo 12, becoming the third person to walk on the Moon. By 1972 he was among the most recognizable figures of the American space program.
Fine condition.
