Alan Bean (1932–2018) was a U.S. Navy test pilot, NASA astronaut, and the fourth person to walk on the Moon. As Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 12 in November 1969, he and Commander Charles “Pete” Conrad completed the second successful lunar landing, spending more than 31 hours on the Moon while conducting scientific experiments and collecting lunar samples. Bean later commanded Skylab 3, the second crewed mission to America’s first space station, where he and his crewmates set a then-record for the longest crewed spaceflight. Following his retirement from NASA, Bean became an acclaimed artist whose paintings uniquely reflected his experiences as a lunar explorer.
