Joshua Bates autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated November 30, 1841, written from “So. R.,” and addressed to “Dr. B. D. North School.” In the letter, Bates apologizes for the short notice and discusses plans to visit local schools, writing in part: “The North & East schools are to be visited today.” Signed at the conclusion, “Yours &c., Joshua Bates.”

In the letter Bates informs the recipient that the North and East schools are scheduled for inspection that day and explains that he only received notice the previous day. He further advises that the group intends to depart from his residence before one o’clock and asks that if the recipient is traveling in a sleigh, he stop and take Bates along. The letter offers a glimpse into the administration and oversight of local educational institutions during the early nineteenth century, as well as the practical realities of winter travel in New England.

Joshua Bates (1776-1854) was an American Congregational clergyman and educator best remembered for serving as president of Middlebury College from 1829 to 1839. A respected minister and academic leader, Bates played an important role in New England education during the first half of the nineteenth century. Letters relating to his educational and civic activities provide insight into the development of schools and higher education in antebellum America.
