Postmarked in Columbia, South Carolina, on April 18, 1992, the cover features a special anniversary reunion cachet marking the fiftieth anniversary of the historic Doolittle Raid. Doolittle has signed the cover in blue ink across the lower right.

James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle (1896-1993) was a pioneering aviator, military officer, and Medal of Honor recipient best known for leading the Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942, the first American air attack against the Japanese home islands during World War II. Commanding sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, Doolittle’s daring mission provided a critical boost to American morale in the months following Pearl Harbor. He later commanded the Twelfth, Fifteenth, and Eighth Air Forces in Europe and retired as a lieutenant general in the U.S. Air Force.
