Troxell of St. Louis, Missouri, the image presents Schofield in a formal studio portrait during the Civil War and is mounted on the photographer’s card stock bearing his imprint on the reverse.

John McAllister Schofield (1831-1906) was a Union general whose military career spanned the Civil War and the postwar United States Army. A graduate of West Point, Schofield commanded forces in Missouri and later led the Army of the Ohio during critical campaigns in the Western Theater. His successful defense against Confederate General John Bell Hood during the Franklin-Nashville Campaign helped secure Union control of Tennessee and contributed significantly to the Confederacy’s collapse. For his actions at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Following the war, Schofield served as Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson and eventually rose to become Commanding General of the United States Army.
