Details:
Robert C. Schenck autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, written on House of Representatives Committee of Ways and Means stationery and dated July 30, 1870, from the Revere House in New York. Written entirely in Schenck’s hand and addressed to the Attorney General of the United States, the letter is signed, “Robt. C. Schenck.”
Robert C. Schenck writes regarding a petition for the pardon of an individual identified as Mr. G. White, who had been convicted of counterfeiting in the Southern District of Ohio and was then imprisoned in the Montgomery County Jail. Schenck explains that he had previously presented the petition to President Grant and notes his understanding that the matter had been referred to the Attorney General for examination and report. He respectfully requests an update on the status of the case and asks to be informed of any action that has been taken. The letter provides an interesting glimpse into Schenck’s congressional duties and his involvement in seeking executive clemency on behalf of a constituent.
Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.

After the war he returned to Congress, where he became chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, and later served as United States Minister to Great Britain.
