Description
(1810-1871) Mexican American and Civil War Union general who saw action at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Sherman's March to the Sea, and was later a U.S Congressman. War-date A.L.S. ‘A Williams B.G.’ 1p. 4to., [Fort] Bunker Hill, Mar. 10, 1862, to a fellow unnamed general, in part: ‘…I received two communications from Div. Head Quarters this morning by your messenger, one suggesting an attack & the other ordering a reconnaissance towards Winchester at daylight. I was prepared to march with the Regt taking the other forward within supporting distance when I rec’d a signal order to have three days’ cooked rations ready by 4 am tomorrow. I suppose this countermands the reconnaissance, especially as the distance from this to W[inchester] is only half that from Charlestown to W[inchester]. Can you enlighten me as to whether I should move any of my Regt today. I judge not as my last intimates a movement tomorrow…’. He adds in a postscript: ‘There is a no good camping ground as the place affords just this side of camp of 28 N.Y. near the hill. Col. Donnell is directed to point it out…’. Inlaid at the top and bottom and in very good condition.
