John Pope (1822-1892) was a career United States Army officer who rose to prominence during the Civil War through a series of successful operations in the Western Theater. A graduate of West Point, Pope commanded Union forces during the capture of Island No. 10 on the Mississippi River, one of the North’s important early victories. In 1862 he was appointed commander of the Army of Virginia but suffered defeat against General Robert E. Lee at the Second Battle of Bull Run. Despite this setback, Pope continued to serve the Union throughout the war and later held important military commands on the western frontier. His postwar career included overseeing Reconstruction duties and commanding several military departments during a period of rapid American expansion.
