William Nelson autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated September 28 [no year] from Maysville, Kentucky. Written entirely in Nelson’s hand and signed, “W. Nelson,” the letter is addressed to George W. Jones.

In this brief but colorful note, Nelson requests that Jones send him samples of various grades of flannel manufactured by a firm identified as “Dickinsons.” He explains that he intends to employ some "indigenous farmers who are out of work." The letter provides an unusual glimpse into the business interests and entrepreneurial activities of the future Union general prior to his Civil War fame.

William “Bull” Nelson (1824–1862) was a United States Navy officer who became a Union major general during the Civil War. A native of Kentucky, Nelson played a key role in keeping the state aligned with the Union and commanded troops during the Kentucky Campaign of 1862. Known for his imposing physical stature and forceful personality, he was mortally wounded on September 29, 1862, after a personal altercation with fellow Union General Jefferson C. Davis at the Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky. Nelson’s death remains one of the most extraordinary and notorious incidents involving senior officers during the Civil War.
