John A. McClernand autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated March 19, 1863, from Headquarters, XIII Army Corps at Milliken’s Bend, Louisiana. Written entirely in McClernand’s hand and signed, “John A. McClernand, Maj. Genl. Comg.”

In this brief wartime note, McClernand issues a written pass authorizing Dr. Franklin, a surgeon attached to the Convalescent Hospital at Milliken’s Bend, to travel “out and in the lines” until his work is completed. The letter was written during the Union Army’s operations against Vicksburg and reflects the day-to-day administrative responsibilities required to support military medical services in the field.

John Alexander McClernand (1812–1900) was a prominent Union major general during the American Civil War. A former Illinois congressman and political ally of Abraham Lincoln, McClernand played important roles in the campaigns against Fort Donelson, Arkansas Post, and Vicksburg. He commanded the XIII Army Corps during the Vicksburg Campaign and was one of the most politically influential volunteer generals in the Union Army. His military career reflected both his battlefield service and his significance within the wartime political landscape of the Union.
