John A. McClernand autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated February 1, 1849. Written entirely in McClernand’s hand and signed, “Jno. A. McClernand,” the brief note is addressed to the publishing firm of Ritchie & Heiss and references Illinois Congressman William A. Denning.
In this correspondence, John A. McClernand requests that copies of the publication The Weekly Union be sent to Congressman William A. Denning and charged to McClernand’s account. Though brief in content, the letter documents routine political and publishing business during McClernand’s early congressional career and reflects the importance of newspaper circulation and political communication in antebellum Washington.
Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
John Alexander McClernand (1812–1900) was an Illinois politician, lawyer, and Union general during the Civil War. A close political ally of Stephen A. Douglas, he served multiple terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before the war. During the conflict, he rose to major general and played prominent roles in the campaigns against Fort Hindman, Vicksburg, and along the Mississippi River. Although often a controversial figure due to his political ambitions and disputes with fellow commanders, McClernand remained one of the most notable political generals of the Civil War era.
