William B. Hazen autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, written on official Office of the Chief Signal Officer stationery and dated February 1, 1884, from Washington, D.C. Written entirely in Hazen’s hand and addressed to an unidentified recipient, the letter is signed, “W. B. Hazen.”

William B. Hazen writes a brief note requesting the return of a pamphlet together with an article on the “Mission Ridge.” The correspondence provides an interesting glimpse into the exchange of military publications and historical research among senior officers in the post-Civil War era.

Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.

William Babcock Hazen (1830–1887) was a career United States Army officer who served with distinction during the Civil War, earning recognition for his leadership at Stones River, Chickamauga, and the Atlanta Campaign. Following the war, he became Chief Signal Officer of the U.S. Army, overseeing the Signal Corps and the nation’s developing weather observation system. Hazen remained one of the Army’s most prominent and outspoken officers until his death in 1887.
