Description
(1828 - 1865) Confederate major general and one of the Confederacy's best tactical cavalry commanders. Wharton was wounded at Shiloh and Stones River, and later led cavalry under Lt. Gen. Richard Taylor during the Red River Campaign. He was killed in Houston, Texas over a simmering dispute on military matters. Very rare war-date A.E.S. in black ink on a 2.25 in. sq. slip of paper cut from a larger document, in full: ‘Hd qr Wharton’s Cav Com’y in the field June 18/64 Apvd & resp’y forward. Jno A Wharton Maj Genl’. Mounted on a 3.75 x 2.5 in card, shows adhesive residue on recto and verso, otherwise in very good condition.
