William B. Franklin autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated February 6, 1874, from Hartford, Connecticut. Written entirely in Franklin’s hand and signed, “W. B. Franklin,” the letter is addressed to B. S. Warner.
William B. Franklin writes that he believes the enclosed item may be of interest to the recipient. He notes that it was written under excitement and contains a message intended for Warner in its latter portion. Franklin further observes that while the enclosed writing is not intended for public display, it is certainly not the work of a quiet man, offering a brief but intriguing commentary on the contents and temperament of the author of the enclosed piece.
Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
William Buel Franklin (1823–1903) was a career U.S. Army officer, civil engineer, and Union general during the Civil War. A graduate of West Point, he served with distinction in the Army of the Potomac and rose to command the Left Grand Division at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Following the war, Franklin remained active in engineering and business pursuits, becoming one of the most prominent military engineers of his generation.
