19th Century American financial and business archive consisting of more than forty original manuscript and printed documents dating primarily from the early to mid nineteenth century. The collection includes merchant accounts, receipts, invoices, financial statements, business correspondence, promissory notes, shipping and freight records, school-related accounts, legal and commercial correspondence, and other examples of everyday economic activity from the period.
The archive contains a diverse assortment of material documenting commerce and daily life in nineteenth-century America. Included are numerous handwritten receipts and account statements for goods, services, labor, building materials, freight, postage, and household purchases; merchant invoices from Boston and other northeastern cities; business letters discussing payments, collections, and commercial transactions; and various financial records relating to schools, local businesses, tradesmen, merchants, and private individuals. Several pieces retain attractive printed business headings and letterheads, while others provide detailed handwritten accounts and itemized expenditures.
