John Ellis Wool (1784–1869) was one of the longest-serving officers in United States military history. A veteran of the War of 1812, he gained national recognition for his service at the Battle of Queenston Heights and later distinguished himself during the Mexican-American War. During the Civil War, Wool commanded the Department of Virginia and played an important role in securing Union-held territory in the early years of the conflict. By the time of his retirement, he was among the most senior and respected officers in the United States Army.
