Thomas William Sweeny (1820-1892) was a career United States Army officer who served with distinction in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. A native of Ireland, Sweeny immigrated to the United States and rose through the ranks of the regular army. During the Civil War he commanded Union forces in several important western campaigns, including service under Ulysses S. Grant. Having lost an arm in military service years before the Civil War, Sweeny became one of the Union Army’s most recognizable officers. He played notable roles in the Atlanta Campaign and other operations that helped secure Union victory in the Western Theater. Following the war, he continued his military career before retiring from the army after more than four decades of service.
