Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
David Sloan Stanley (1828–1902) was one of the most accomplished U.S. Army officers of the nineteenth century, earning distinction during both the Civil War and the Indian Wars. During the Civil War he commanded troops in major engagements including Stones River, Chickamauga, Atlanta, and Franklin, receiving the Medal of Honor for gallantry under fire at the Battle of Franklin. Following the war, Stanley spent decades on frontier duty, participating in campaigns against Plains tribes and serving in senior commands throughout the American West. By the time of this letter he was commanding the Department of Texas, one of the Army’s most important frontier posts, and he ultimately retired as a brigadier general in the Regular Army.
