George R. Caron autographed 8.5 x 11” four-page facsimile copy of a wartime War Department report relating to the activation and reorganization of Army Air Forces units connected with the atomic bomb program. The reproduced document bears period classification markings including “RESTRICTED” and “IMMEDIATE ACTION.” Caron has signed the final page in blue ink, adding the inscription “H.C.H. 1,” referring to his role as the tail gunner aboard the B-29 Enola Gay during the Hiroshima atomic bombing mission.

George R. Caron (1919–1995) served as the tail gunner aboard the B-29 Enola Gay on August 6, 1945, becoming the only enlisted crewman on the historic mission to Hiroshima. From his position in the aircraft’s tail, Caron witnessed the detonation firsthand and captured one of history’s most famous observations, later describing the immense mushroom cloud rising over the city. A member of the elite 509th Composite Group, Caron remained deeply involved in preserving the history of the atomic missions through reunions, publications, and signed memorabilia. His autographs are especially sought after by collectors of World War II and atomic bomb history, particularly on documents directly associated with the development and operations of the 509th Composite Group.
