Details:

An interesting discovery lot of approximately 45 pieces, spanning the early 19th century through the Civil War era, comprising a diverse group of original manuscripts, documents, ephemera, prints, photographs, and related historical material. Included are multiple handwritten legal and financial documents, a Civil War hospital muster roll, a copy of Edward Everett Hale’s One Hundred Years Ago: How the War Began, engraved portraits including Abraham Lincoln, nineteenth century bank checks, and additional manuscript material.

A notable highlight is an original blue paper illustrated autograph letter featuring an ink sketch of two figures in a coastal landscape. The letter discusses the progress of the artwork, referencing the completion of a “coast scene” measuring approximately “30 x 42” and plans for its photography before sending it to New York for engraving. The correspondence offers an interesting glimpse into an artist’s working process during the nineteenth century.

Also included is an 1807 document associated with Timothy Pickering, which we believed to bear a secretarial signature rather than Pickering’s hand.

Overall condition varies throughout with expected age toning, folds, scattered staining, edge wear, and handling wear consistent with age. The lot is offered as a discovery group and has not been fully researched.
