Details:
Original 15.5 x 21” manuscript payroll document for an artillery company of the 1st Regiment, Detached Militia, commanded by Captain Reuben Hayes, covering the months of September, October, November, and December 1814 during the closing months of the War of 1812. Spanning two large manuscript sheets, the payroll meticulously records the names of officers, non-commissioned officers, musicians, and enlisted men together with their rank, dates of service, pay rates, travel allowances, deductions for clothing, and total compensation. The roster includes Captain Reuben Hayes, Lieutenant Alfred Smith, Ensign Josiah Fannon, numerous sergeants and corporals, drummers and fifers, and approximately ninety enlisted soldiers, providing a remarkable surviving record of a militia artillery company called into federal service during the final year of the conflict.
Very good condition for a large wartime payroll. Folded as issued with expected toning, scattered separations and edge losses along fold intersections, none affecting the overall legibility of the manuscript entries.
The War of 1812 (1812-1815) was fought between the United States and Great Britain over maritime rights, frontier conflicts, and British interference with American commerce. During the war, thousands of state militia units were called into federal service to defend the nation’s coasts, ports, and northern frontier against British attack. Payrolls such as this served as the official financial record of military service, documenting not only the men who answered the call to arms but also the practical realities of wartime administration, including pay, travel expenses, clothing deductions, and length of service.
