Description
(1837-1864) Confederate major general, at one point the youngest in the army, commended by Robert E. Lee for his actions at Chancellorsville and Malvern Hill leading the Stonewall brigade. Killed in action at the Battle of Cedar Creek. Very rare manuscript D.S. ‘S. D. Ramseur’ on late-war ‘hardship’ paper, 1p. oblong folio, [n.p.], July, 1864, a statement of forage consumed by animals under the command of a Capt. C. S. Hart, assistant quartermaster, ‘[Gen. Jubal] Early’s Division’. Ramseur signs at the bottom in black ink as major general commanding the division, approving the statement. Ramseur’s signature is quite light but still very legible, and the document shows folds and an archival tape mark on the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition. Ramseur held the rank of Major General for only four months before his death.
