Anthony of New York from a Brady photographic negative, the mount identifies the subject as “Maj. Gen. U.S. Grant.” One of the most iconic and sought-after Civil War portrait subjects, the image captures Grant at the height of his rise to national prominence during the conflict.

Ulysses Simpson Grant (1822-1885) was the Union Army’s most successful general and the commanding officer chiefly responsible for securing victory over the Confederacy. A graduate of West Point, Grant gained national attention through decisive victories at Forts Henry and Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga before being appointed General-in-Chief of all Union armies by President Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Working in coordination with General William T. Sherman and other commanders, Grant directed the campaigns that ultimately forced General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. Following the war, Grant served two terms as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877 and remains one of the most significant military and political figures in American history.
