The document reads in part: “Certify that I require for the use of Head Quarters Mess the following articles of Subsistence Stores viz – 11 lbs Roast Beef”

Signed by an Assistant Quartermaster at Grant’s headquarters, with an additional notation at the bottom: “And that I have paid for the same,” followed by the signature of H.W. James, Capt. and Asst. Q. Master, Head Quarters Lieut. Genl. U.S. Grant."
