Artemas Ward (1727-1800) was one of the principal military leaders of the American Revolution. A veteran of the French and Indian War, he was appointed the first Commander-in-Chief of the Massachusetts militia following the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775. When the Continental Army was organized, Ward was commissioned as a major general, serving as George Washington’s second-in-command during the Siege of Boston before ill health led to his resignation from active military service in 1776. Following the war, Ward served in the Massachusetts legislature and was elected to the United States House of Representatives during the First Congress.
